CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I didn’t want to do it, but I didn’t have anywhere else to put it. Before getting back to the hotel, I had to make a quick stop at the safe house to lock up the rifle and some of the other gear I had taken with me to the landing strip. I kept the SIG tucked behind my back in my waistbelt now that I was making up the operation as I went.

It was three minutes past six by the time I was back at the hotel. I entered the room just as Luciana was coming out of the bathroom. She looked me in the eyes and we both froze.

An awkward silence hung in the air for a long beat, and I hoped it was nothing more than two strangers coming to the conclusion that maybe they made a poor decision last night.

Finally, Luciana smiled.

Despite her friendliness, I was slow to react.

She noticed my hesitation and said, “I thought you might have run out on me for good.”

“I wanted to get you coffee.”

Her eyes looked at my empty hands. “Liar,” she said.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

She dropped her towel onto the floor, walked straight up to me with a knowing look in her eye, and brought her lips to my cheek. I thought she might mention something about the cartels again, but she never did. Maybe I wanted her to so I would have an easy way to warn her they might look for her. Instead, she just stood there, nuzzling her face against my neck. As much as I wanted to touch her warm, naked body, I didn’t.

Finally, she stepped away and began collecting her clothes from the floor.

I watched her hike up her shorts and button them. Then slide the same form-fitting white tank top she wore last night over her head before tying her hair back in front of the mirror.

As I stood there watching her dress, all l I could think about was who her father was, and what influence Blanco might have over him—if any.

Then, when she wasn’t looking, I placed the Jeep’s keys in with her cellphone and cash and handed them to her, keeping hold of her identification card.

She saw me take it and tried to steal it away from my hand, but I was too tall for her. Tilting my head to the sky I read her name, pretending it was the first time I had heard it. “Luciana Rojas,” I said.

Luciana tilted her head to the side, put her hands on her hips, and gave me a look.

“I think Tiny Dancer suits you better,” I said.

Her eyes smiled. “And what name suits you?”

“That’s for you to decide.”

“Does that mean you want to see me again?”

“How about tonight?”

She took a moment to think it over, but her eyes said yes.

Then she told me her address and said, “Be there at seven.”

Luciana kissed me passionately before leaving.

Before she could close the door, I said, “Be careful out there, okay?”

She gave a knowing look and answered, “I’m a big girl.
